Revitalizing San Antonio’s Entertainment District: A Look Back at the Creative Futures Panel

San Antonio has long been a city that thrives on culture, history, and community, but its Entertainment District is stepping into the future with a bold vision for revitalization. Last October, during San Antonio Startup Week 2024, The Down Market hosted the Creative Futures Panel, an electrifying conversation that brought together leaders, visionaries, and creatives to discuss what’s next for the city’s cultural and entertainment hub. Held in the Main Hall at the Geekdom Event Center, the panel, titled “NXT.UP pt. 2 | Revitalizing San Antonio's Entertainment District,” became one of the most talked-about sessions of the week.

With a dynamic lineup of speakers and a packed audience eager to learn about the city’s evolving landscape, the panel delivered an inspiring and thought-provoking discussion on how urban development, infrastructure, and community engagement intersect to shape San Antonio’s future.

A Vision for Transformation

The session opened with Trish DeBerry, President & CEO of Centro San Antonio, painting a vivid picture of the Entertainment District’s revitalization. DeBerry emphasized the district’s potential to honor San Antonio’s rich sports and entertainment legacy while embracing the needs of a growing, modern city.

“This isn’t just about development—it’s about creating a vibrant, walkable, and livable urban environment that brings people together,” DeBerry explained. “We want the Entertainment District to be a space where culture and community thrive.”

The vision includes not only revitalizing existing venues and infrastructure but also creating opportunities for local businesses, artists, and creatives to contribute to the district’s growth.

Balancing Community, Culture, and Infrastructure

As the discussion moved forward, David Robinson Jr. and Natalie Smith of Weston Urban shared insights into how their projects are reshaping San Antonio’s downtown. Robinson Jr., a Development Manager, highlighted the importance of thoughtful urban planning and community-driven development.

“San Antonio’s story is rooted in its people,” Robinson Jr. noted. “Our goal is to ensure that the Entertainment District reflects that story while creating new opportunities for growth.”

Smith, Weston Urban’s VP of Strategy, added that infrastructure improvements are key to supporting this growth. From better public transit to modernized facilities, the district’s transformation is designed to make it more accessible and inclusive for all San Antonians.

Opportunities for Creatives and Local Businesses

Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of the panel was the focus on opportunities for local businesses and creatives. Stephanie Guerra, Founder of Puro Pinche, spoke passionately about how the Entertainment District can serve as a platform for San Antonio’s unique culture to shine.

“This city is bursting with talent, and the Entertainment District is a chance to put that talent on display,” Guerra said. “From live music to art installations to local food vendors, we have a chance to create something truly special here.”

Guerra’s comments struck a chord with the audience, many of whom were small business owners and artists looking to engage with the city’s evolving cultural scene. The panel encouraged these creators to see themselves as active participants in the district’s transformation, offering a hopeful vision of collaboration and shared growth.

Economic and Cultural Growth

The panel also delved into the broader impact of the Entertainment District’s revitalization on San Antonio’s economy and cultural identity. Moderator Corey Mac steered the conversation toward the ways this transformation could boost tourism, create jobs, and enhance the city’s appeal as a cultural destination.

“This is more than just a local project—it’s about putting San Antonio on the map in a way that resonates globally,” Mac said. “When we invest in culture, infrastructure, and community, the ripple effects are enormous.”

DeBerry echoed these sentiments, noting that the Entertainment District’s revitalization is about creating a sustainable future for the city while staying true to its roots. The panelists agreed that balancing modern needs with historical preservation is essential to ensuring the district’s long-term success.

Looking Ahead: The Future of San Antonio’s Entertainment District

As the panel came to a close, there was a palpable sense of excitement in the room. The Entertainment District is not just a physical space—it’s a vision for what San Antonio can become when culture, community, and innovation come together.

For The Down Market, producing this panel during San Antonio Startup Week was an opportunity to amplify these voices and spark meaningful conversations about the city’s future. As San Antonio continues to grow and evolve, the Entertainment District stands as a symbol of what’s possible when we invest in creativity, community, and collaboration.

The Creative Futures Panel wasn’t just a discussion—it was a call to action. Whether you’re a business owner, an artist, or simply someone who loves San Antonio, there’s a role for you in shaping the future of the Entertainment District.
